About GitHub Copilot
GitHub Copilot is GitHub's AI assistant for writing and shipping code. It started as autocomplete in the editor and now covers the whole path from an open issue to a reviewed, merged pull request.
Where it works
- In the editor: code completion, next-edit suggestions, chat and an agent mode in VS Code and other IDEs.
- On the command line: Copilot CLI.
- On GitHub: assign an issue to the Copilot cloud agent, or to third-party agents such as Claude Code and OpenAI Codex, and they work in the background and open a pull request. Copilot code review comments on pull requests.
- Copilot app: a desktop workspace for launching, tracking and merging agent work across repositories.
You can choose between models from several providers, and Copilot Spaces lets a team give it shared context from docs and repositories.
Plans
As of October 2026:
- Free: 2,000 completions a month and access to models such as Haiku 4.5 and GPT-5 mini, no credit card required. Verified students get a separate Copilot Student plan.
- Pro: unlimited completions, the cloud agent, code review, third-party agents and model selection.
- Pro+ and Max: premium models such as Opus and much higher usage.
- Business and Enterprise: admin controls, audit logs and policies for which MCP servers developers may use.
Who it's for
Any developer already on GitHub. The free tier is enough to try completions and chat in VS Code.
